RESPECT and the curriculum
The academy follows the Early Years Curriculum for EYFS and the National Curriculum for children in Year 1 to Year 6.
Like everything that we do The Parks has designed a bespoke curriculum to meet the needs of our pupils.
In our academy we are committed to developing a love of Reading. We believe that children should be taught phonics first and fast to unlock opportunuties for decoding and reading fluency. For Phonics teaching we use the 'Letters and Sounds' document to ensure succinct and sequential teaching of Phonics. We have also recently invested in phonetically decodable home reading books matched to the children's phonic phase. All of our children have access to high quality ambitious texts through the DELTA Reading Strategy sessions. We have also created a new library space for all of our pupils to access and enjoy. Reading is central to the curriculum and is a whole academy priority.
Writing including Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation
In our academy we have developed a strategy for writing that is both progressive and immersive with a focus on audience and purpose. We have worked hard to ensure that children are encouraged to become authours through a sequential teaching approach, with a focus of editing and improving, leading up to publication. Spelling is taught daily and follows a four part structure, to ensure that children have the opporunity to revisit, teach, practise and apply. Grammar and punctuation are taught through modelled and shared writing with some specific sessions to expose children to new skills.
At The Parks we use the 'Same Day Intervention' approach to Maths which provides fast paced sessions with a balance between modelling/shared and independent work. We ensure that misconceptions are addressed quickly and that mastery and conceptual Maths is valued and embedded throughout the academy.
The RESPECT curriculum is a sequential and ambitious approach to the teaching of the Foundation Subjects.
The curriculum approach is rooted in:
R- Responsibility and Respect
T-The Basic Skills
As part of our currciulum offer we also use a Pledge system which is new to the Academy this academic year and Essential Experiences.
We teach Science, RE, PSHE, PE and Foreign Languages thematically.
Science is an important part of a broad and balanced curriculum we aim to deliver at The Parks. As a Trust we have created a Science strategy which we feel is progressive and meets the needs of our pupils.
Planning for Science is progressive and rooted in experiential science as we believe children need to be ‘hands on’ and experience the awe and wonder that Science can bring.
Religious Education is an important element in the broad and balanced curriculum we aim to provide at The Parks Academy. Through our RE curriculum we provide opportunities to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of world religions and reflect on the challenging questions that it provokes. RE is planned and delivered in-line with the LA agreed syllabus.
At The Parks Primary Academy we have adopted the Jigsaw programme because it will:Deliver a wider range of experiences
Provide pupils with the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community.
Encourage pupils to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning.
Enable participation in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities.
Help pupils learn to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
Foster understanding and respect for our common humanity, diversity and differences so that pupils can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.
